Hi all,

I am nearing the end or a rather long rebuild/restoration of an ow and I would appreciate some advice from someone in the know.

The bike didnt run when I got it, and after a complete engine rebuild due to getting the cases blasted I finally got to start the thing for the first time in about 20 years last week.My delight at hearing it run was quickly replaced by concern due to the rather noisy engine.Clutch rattle and knocking camshaft noise. It does not sound terrible, just a lot more mechanical than I expected. Carbs have been balanced and valve clearances are all ok but it somehow doesnt sound as smooth as I expected. It hunts on idle and doesnt sound happy. It responds crisply to the throttle and the motor sounds fine when revs rise. Am I expecting too much from an old engine? Maybe I am too used to working with modern engines. (I am a Honda tec, sorry)

I have some "spare" wires under the seat. A white 2 pin block connector with a red and brown wire and 2 male bullet connectors with a red/blue and a green wire. Any ideas what they may be for? They are not shown on the race loom diagram.

The bike was restricted by webs covering up 1/3 of the inlet rubbers and small main jets, (100s and 105s) Is the ecm restricted as well, if so is it posible to de restrict it?

I would like to get some deltabox decals for the frame and swing arm and some ohlins decals for the swing arm and gas resovoir on the shock, any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Peter.

HI Peter

Ive just spoken to Peter, we had a good chat about your engine. He said if the valve clearances are wide then its a tappety noise, rather than a knock. Thinking about it, he always sets mine wide at the start of each season, they are a bit tappy until they close up. The design doesnt allow for any end float on the cams, He agreed, without hearing it, its difficult to tell, but for peace of mind, he did say it is worth taking the cam cover off, and checking that the pulley is tight. Obviously this could cause a knock. Plus, you wouldnt want it coming loose!

Dont worry about the spare wires. Peter said he has puzzled for hours over these wires on the imports, and concluded they are part of the restriction, and nothing to worry about. He said just isolate (tape off) the bullet connectors and the block connector and you will have no problems.

The ECU is not restricted, we have them on some of the race bikes.

Decals wise, I can do the following for you;

OHLINS SMALL SHOCK DECAL (LOGO) £2.50

OHLINS SWINGARM DECAL £3.50

DELTABOX (frame) £8.00 (pair)

DELTABOX (Swingarm) £5.00 (pair)

Postage £1

Making a rather convenient £20 (not intentional!!)

Maybe I will try your 20p trick, that seems to be the way to tell if an ow is running properly!

Hi,

I'm looking for the checking value of the frame on a marble?
